April 2024

8 week sprint to the end!

We have two months left in the school year. It is a sprint from here to the end of the year! Students will have so many distractions starting up that it can become challenging to continue academic growth and progress to prepare for the following year!

At school, we have track that will be kicking into overdrive. We have band that will have Band-O-Rama, Spring Concerts and Graduation performances. We have ceremonies for honor students and athletic awards that will be held. We will have field trips at each grade level.

At home, we will have warmer weather for longer afternoons outside. We will have summer activities starting their practices with baseball and softball, in particular.

Scheduling your student's time will be pivotal to maintaining their progress! We are here to help with anything to support your child's academic progress during these final months!

Attendance

For the year, Washington School has a collective attendance percentage of 94.6%. This means that our students average about 4 absences for the year. If your child is missing more than four days of school to this point in the year, they are at-risk for falling behind their peers. When students miss school, they miss instruction, they miss feedback, they miss opportunities to collaborate and work on activities. When students experience those losses it can potentially build into anxiety. Anxiety about the work piling up, social shifts. Additionally, students who are chronically absent are at higher risk of falling behind, scoring lower on standardized tests and even dropping out.

For the month of March, Washington School has a collective attendance percentage of 95%, which was up 1.7% from February.

We want your kids at school everyday!

Online Registration

We continue our development to making things as easy as possible for families.

We will be opening up registration in the coming weeks, so that families can register their child(ren) for the 2024-25 school year. This will be done on TeacherEase and you will receive an email notification about the process being open.

Any paperwork that you need to share with the district can be dropped off at any point throughout the year. Such as:

  • Physicals

  • Medical Information

  • Personal documents

Residency will need to be proved at a point within 30 days of the school year starting and we will send out notice about when you would be able to complete that process, as well.

Midterm Reports

3rd Trimester Midterm Reports will be sent home on Friday April 19th. Please make sure to communicate concerns with your child’s teacher. Encourage your child to finish the school year strong and continue to make sure they are getting all of their work turned in on time!

Solar Eclipse April 8th

Students that have turned in their opt-in forms will be participating in activities related to the full solar eclipse including a viewing of the eclipse. Students that are participating will be wearing solar eclipse viewers purchased by the school.

Students that do not turn in their opt-in forms will be doing academic activities indoors, some will be related to the solar eclipse.

Notice: Admission for Homeless Children

Under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, any homeless child shall be immediately admitted, even if the child’s parent/guardian is unable to produce records normally required for enrollment. A homeless child may attend the District school that the child attended when permanently housed or in which the child was last enrolled. A home child living in any District school’s attendance area may attend that school. The child shall have access to the same free, appropriate public education as provided to other children, including a public preschool education. Please contact Kelly Legrenzi, homeless liaison for the Oglesby Public School District for additional information about homeless issues.

Nurse's Notes

Preschool students who will be entering Oglesby Public School for the first time will be required to have a physical examination and immunizations in accordance with the requirements of the State of Illinois.  Lead screening is also required for preschool students; please submit the result of the lead test with the physical examination.

Students who will be enrolling in Kindergarten will be required to have a physical examination and immunizations in accordance with the requirements of the State of Illinois.  There is a state law requiring eye exams for school-aged children that took effect on January 1, 2008.  The law calls for a comprehensive eye exam to take place within one year prior to entering kindergarten.  Proof of the eye exam must be submitted by October 15 of each school year.  Kindergarten students also need a dental exam in accordance with Law HB 752.  Lead screening is only required for Kindergarten students if no previous screening was done in a preschool program.  If you had a previous lead screening, please submit the results, if these are not already on file at Oglesby.

Students who will be entering in the Sixth Grade are required to have a physical examination with updated immunizations along with a dental examination.

Sports physicals are needed for students playing sports in grades 5, 7, and 8.  The school physical for 6th graders will be accepted as their sports physical. Please note a sports physical will not be accepted as a school physical for 6th grade students.

It is the parents’ responsibility to make sure these requirements are met prior to the start of the school year.  Your child will be excluded from school upon review of his or her records if they are found to be incomplete.  Please hand in your child’s physical, dental, and eye examinations at registration on July 30, 2024

You can obtain a school physical with your primary care physician or by calling the Community Health Partnership of Illinois/Mendota at (815) 539-6124.  Dental exams can be made by calling your family dentist or by calling the Community Health Partnership of Illinois/Mendota at (815) 539-6124.  Sports physicals may be obtained through your family physician or at local prompt care centers (including OSF On Call Urgent Care in Ottawa and OSF Prompt Care in Peru, Ottawa, or Princeton).  Please call School Nurse Jordan at (815) 883-8932 ext. 118 if you have any questions regarding these requirements.
