The 8th grade students were unable to go to the Illinois Holocaust Museum this year due to renovations at the Museum. Instead ELA teachers Ms. Goff, Miss Eustice, and Miss Nelson, and history teacher Mrs. Myer planned a morning of meaningful and engaging activities for students to learn about the Holocaust beyond the pages of a book.
With the focus on survivor stories, students began the morning on a Zoom call with the U.S. Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C. On the call, students learned the story of Louise Lawrence Israels, who went into hiding with her family in an attic when she was 6 months old. She told an amazing tale of survival, bravery, the heroism of her parents and members of the resistance who helped the family get supplies while in hiding. She left students with a message of equality and acceptance in the trying times we live in today. More about Louise's story can be found at the website linked. https://www.ushmm.org/.../volunteers/louise-lawrence-israels
Then students watched videos of guided tours of the Illinois Holocaust Museum. Within these videos, students got the stories behind important artifacts at the museum.
Finally, students got to interact with materials telling the story of one survivor through pictures and artifacts. These items are on loan to us through the Illinois Holocaust Museum.

Illinois Assessment of Readiness |
Illinois Assessment of Readiness and Illinois Science Assessment
Thank you for the support in getting kids to school over the last two weeks! We had 95% attendance during that time, which helps to limit instructional disruptions for all students!
On Friday, March 27 we held our Academic Olympics as a reward to the students for the work and effort they displayed in taking those 5 assessments for Math & Reading! We finished the day with a large painting lesson held by a local artist.

For the month, Washington School has a collective attendance percentage of 93%.
For the year, Washington School has a collective attendance percentage of 94.1%.
This means that our students average about 4 absences for the year. If your child is missing more than four days of school to this point in the year, they are at-risk for falling behind their peers. When students miss school, they miss instruction, they miss feedback, they miss opportunities to collaborate and work on activities. When students experience those losses it can potentially build into anxiety. Anxiety about the work piling up, social shifts. Additionally, students who are chronically absent are at higher risk of falling behind, scoring lower on standardized tests and even dropping out..
We want your child at school everyday!

We do not have school on Monday, April 6th. We return back to school on Tuesday, April 7th.
Hopefully were all able to recharge our batteries with some outside time during that break!

We are pleased to share that on Tuesday, April 28th, we will recognize 52 of our students for their outstanding academic performance this year. These students have consistently achieved Honor Roll status for both Trimesters 1 and 2, showcasing their commitment to excellence.
We will host a special breakfast for these students to celebrate their hard work and dedication. This is a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge their achievements and for us to congratulate them on their success.
We are incredibly proud of these students and their dedication to learning.
Pictures of the event will be posted on the district's Facebook page.

Preschool students who will be entering Oglesby Public School for the first time will be required to have a physical examination and immunizations in accordance with the requirements of the State of Illinois. Lead screening is also required for preschool students; please submit the result of the lead test with the physical examination.
Students who will be enrolling in Kindergarten will be required to have a physical examination and immunizations in accordance with the requirements of the State of Illinois. There is a state law requiring eye exams for school-aged children that took effect on January 1, 2008. The law calls for a comprehensive eye exam to take place within one year prior to entering kindergarten. Proof of the eye exam must be submitted by October 15 of each school year. Kindergarten students also need a dental exam in accordance with Law HB 752. Lead screening is only required for Kindergarten students if no previous screening was done in a preschool program. If you had a previous lead screening, please submit the results, if these are not already on file at Oglesby.
Students who will be entering in the Sixth Grade are required to have a physical examination with updated immunizations along with a dental examination.
Sports physicals are needed for students playing sports in grades 5, 7, and 8. The school physical for 6th graders will be accepted as their sports physical. Please note a sports physical will not be accepted as a school physical for 6th grade students.
It is the parents’ responsibility to make sure these requirements are met prior to the start of the school year. Your child will be excluded from school upon review of his or her records if they are found to be incomplete. Please hand in your child’s physical, dental, and eye examinations at registration on August 5, 2025.
You can obtain a school physical with your primary care physician. Dental exams can be made by calling your family dentist. Sports physicals may be obtained through your family physician or at local prompt care centers (including OSF On Call Urgent Care in Ottawa and OSF Prompt Care in Peru, Ottawa, or Princeton). Please call School Nurse Jordan at (815) 883-8932 ext. 118 if you have any questions regarding these requirements. |
